The baseline survey for WEAVE project in Bac Kan province

From 10th to 13rd August, 2016, The Agriculture and Forestry Research & Development Center for mountainous region (ADC) in collaboration with CARE International in Vietnam and Bac Kan Provincial Women's Union conducted an initial survey in order to build baseline report for “Women’s Economic Empowerment through Agricultural Value Chain Enhancement - WEAVE)” project at Thanh Van and Mai Lap communes, Cho Moi district, Bac Kan province. The participants of the survey include Value Chain Development Specialists, specialists of CARE international in Vietnam, officers of Women's Union of Bac Kan province and staffs of ADC.

The survey was conducted with the aim of collecting complete information on the status of capacity, position, the voice and participation of ethnic minority women in economic development activities and social activities. Then, the baseline report is able to build with detailed and realistic information for WEAVE project. The results of this survey will be the basis for the collaboration of ADC, CARE international in Vietnam and of Women's Union of Bac Kan province in building plans appropriate to the conditions and demands of local area, in order to enhance women's position and aim at gender equality.

The tools using in this survey include the questionnaire for households and the Abbreviated Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index (A-WEAI) to interview directly 120 households in Thanh Van and Mai Lap communes, Cho Moi district, Bac Kan province about the right and role of each family’s member, especially about the right and role of women in making decisions related to production activities, labor division and family life. The information collected from survey process reflected the existent status in the rights and voices of many women in Thanh Van and Mai Lap communes. This is the foundation for ADC, CARE international in Vietnam and of Women's Union of Bac Kan province to provide appropriate solutions in order to improve life’s condition, enhance the role, voice, and participant of ethnic minority women in Bac Kan province in the process of socio-economic development.

Through this survey, ADC has once again shown the partners in the project the role of a center with experiences in working for the sustainable development of communities through developing the value chains in agriculture, as a premise for the development of cooperation with other domestic and foreign organizations and networks in the future.
