From 23-25 October 2015 Dr. Ho Ngoc Son, Deputy Director of ADC participated in the training workshop on "Research Methodology on the ability to link FLEGT and REDD+ in controlling legal timber" in Da Nang.
The training workshop was in the framework of the project to strengthen the capacity of non-governmental organizations in the process of negotiating the VPA funded by EU. FLEGT is the initiative on legal timber controlling by the European Union (EU). Vietnam is in the process of negotiation for signing the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) with the EU to implement the FLEGT action plans. Meanwhile, REDD+ is an initiative to control emissions from deforestation in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Both initiatives had some things in common, including the limited issue of illegal timber, enhancing the participation and community livelihoods depended on forests. The workshop aimed to build framework outlines and research tools. The research will be carried out in the provinces with REDD+. The objective of the study is to provide recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of REDD+ and FLEGT.
