In recent years, the effects of climate change (CC) climate cause unusual performance of weather such as storms, droughts, floods, affecting production and people's life in Thanh Van and Mai Lap communes, Cho Moi district, Bac Kan province.

Seeing the impacts of climate to forest production, in 2012, ADC together with the funding and technique support of CARE international in Vietnam studied and supported communities in 2 communes Thanh Van and Thanh Mai in researching and identifying some local crops which are able to cope with the unusual conditions of the weather, limiting the damages causing by climate change in the areas of 2 Thanh Van and Mai Lap communes in particular and in the Bac Kan province in general.

Currently, the local community in Bac Kan province has obtained significant successes from the ginger model, medicinal plants intercropped with banana to adapt with drought in the sloping land model supported by ADC. These successes opened new potentials in agricultural production, enhanced economic values in order to aim toward a sustainable agricultural production and minimize the impacts of climate change to agricultural production of Thanh Van and Mai Lap communes. Besides, ADC supported local communities and governments in Thanh Van and Mai Lap communes in actively replicating the model to transfer the crop structures, promote agricultural restructure and increase economic effectiveness for farmers in protecting the environment.

Mr. Nong Van Vy – Leader of Banana group of Na Chua hamlet, Thanh Van commune said “after 4 years of experiment and expand, the ginger model, medicinal plants intercropped with banana to adapt with drought in the sloping land model has adapted well to the local weather conditions and had high and stable productivity contributing to the sustainable poverty reduction for the local area in general and his family in particular”. Until now, the banana garden of his family has 3 ha of banana (around 4000 clumps, 4-5 banana trees per clump). Banana trees in each clump toke it in turns to have the bunch and each clump always had 2 bunches for harvest. After one year, banana trees have bunch. The time from having bunch until harvesting time bases on the climate, normally it takes 3 months (in hot season) and 4 months (in cold season). In average, each bunch has 7-10 clusters, even up to 12 clusters/ bunch. Currently, the selling price of raw banana is 3 500 – 6 000 dong/kg, especially in the end of Lunar year time (Tet) the banana price is higher”. Besides the major income from selling banana, Mr. Vy also has income from selling banana seedlings and flowers. Currently, each year, after deducting the costs his family earned about 100-120 million in this area.
